Figure 1. Relief of King Antiochus and Mithra, from temple at Commagene in the Taurus Mountains. The Roman Mithras was only one form of a deity worshipped for thousands of years and known in at least six traditions. Recently argument has arisen over how closely we can identify Mithras with the Persian Mithra. But as this relief shows. Mithra (on the right) has much in common with the Mithras. The Phrygian cap, the speckled stars, the Persian trousers, the cape which is often clasped by a serpent, the rays of light from the cap. All these in some form reappear in the Roman mysteries. Though the traditions differ radically, this is the same god who has been worshipped for over 3500 years and continues to be worshipped today. (From Cumont. Textes et Monuments figures relatifs aux mystères de Mithra, H. Lamerton, Brussels, 1896, p.188.)
